Low Mood & Motivation

Understanding low mood and finding ways to improve how you feel.

Understanding low mood & motivation

It's normal to feel sad or down sometimes, especially after difficult events. Low mood becomes a concern when it persists for weeks, affects daily functioning, or comes with feelings of hopelessness. Young people may lose interest in activities, feel tired, or have difficulty concentrating.

Coping Strategies

  • 1

Start small with behavioural activation - do one small activity each day that gives you a sense of achievement or enjoyment

  • 2

Maintain a routine - try to wake up, eat, and sleep at regular times

  • 3

Stay connected - reach out to someone you trust, even if it's just a short message

When to Seek Professional Help

  • Low mood has lasted for more than two weeks

  • You've lost interest in nearly all activities

  • You have thoughts of hurting yourself or that life isn't worth living

  • Daily functioning at school or home is significantly affected
